Writer's Workshop Celebration!

We have been working so hard in Writer's Workshop this year!!  So far, the students have published one Personal Narrative and one Realistic Fiction story.  To celebrate all of our hard work, we read our published stories to the students in Kindergarten.  It was so much fun!! An added bonus was that this year's Kindergarten teachers, were last year's Second grade teachers.  So the students got to show off their hard work to their teachers from last year!

So excited to get to read with Mrs. Corson!
Thank you , Kindergarten!!

Learning about Measurement with Pumpkins!

This week we had a fun pumpkin activity that also helped us learn about measurement! We started by estimating the height, weight, circumference and length of the stem for five different pumpkins.  Then, it was time to get out the measuring tapes to measure the actual size of the pumpkins.

Writing Realistic Fiction

In Writer's Workshop, we have been working on writing Realistic Fiction.  The students are creating a fiction character who encounters and real life problem.  We have been using this awesome Fiction Unit by Amanda Nickerson of http://www.oneextradegree.blogspot.com/ .

We started out by creating a character.  The students took several days to develop the character.  They were asked to fill out a character development sheet to really think about what the character would like/dislike.

After planning out a story by developing a character, setting and plot, the students are creating a story rollercoaster.
Check out the entire file by Amanda Nickerson

The students will begin publishing their work within the next day or two.  They are doing such a nice job and I cannot wait to see how they turn out!

Our Focus Lesson today was creating a Powerful Ending for our story.
